With a centre-of-town location, an indoor pool, and the full programme of snow activities, this place delivers on all fronts.
Set next to the Kemijoki River, this place is just a few minutes' walk from the shops, restaurants and bars of Rovaniemi's lively centre. Santa Park is close by too, and you're in a good spot for snow sports like snowmobiling and skiing. You can also hire toboggans from reception.
The property itself is straight from the modern school of design. The lobby is a case in point. A sea of mottled marble laid out with pink and blue armchairs, it’s a simple and fuss-free space that’s welcoming and bright. The same goes for the bedrooms, which are spread between the main building and an annexe reached through a tunnel. Free from grand design gestures; the refurbished ones combine boutiquey grey-and-cerise shades with wooden floors and sleek console desks. The remaining rooms are dressed in more traditional browns and creams. Décor differences aside, however, all come with extras like minibars and hairdryers.
Food-wise, there's one restaurant here offering buffet meals. For breakfast, expect hot and cold selections with everything from sausages and eggs to cheeses, hams and finnish porridge on offer. In the evenings, meanwhile, there’s a Lappish a la Carte menu featuring lots of meat and fish dishes.

It's the hilltop position that sets this place apart from the crowd. The property looks out over Rovaniemi and its surrounding countryside, so the views are nothing short of spectacular. Better still, you’re in a great spot for exploring. The hotel is just footsteps from the Ounasavaara Ski Resort, so you can be whizzing down the slopes within minutes of getting up in the morning. Plus, Rovaniemi’s cosmopolitan city centre is less than five minutes away in a taxi.
As for the hotel itself, it’s home to a stylish restaurant that offers up panoramic views through its floor-to-ceiling windows. The a la carte menu is one of the best in Rovaniemi, and features Lappish favourites like smoked fish and a wide variety of meats. There’s also a buffet section, with plenty in the way of international dishes. After-dinner drinks, meanwhile, come courtesy of the lobby bar. You can even take your beer or wine up to the hotel’s rooftop terrace for a spot of star-gazing.

All the sports and activities here are offered up by The Santa Sport Institute. This training facility includes a spa, a sports hall, a bowling alley and a fitness suite, to name just a few of its features. It's also surrounded by a Nordic Fitness sport Park, where routes for snowshoeing, walking and mountain biking are marked according to their level of difficulty. The skiing is pretty impressive here, too – as well as downhill skiing you can try ski jumping. The best part is, guests staying at the Santa Sport get great discounts at the institute.
The hotel’s dining scene is just as health-orientated. The Fazer Amica Taky is the main restaurant, which serves nutritious dishes as well as plenty of vegetarian choices. Elsewhere, you can get light bites like sandwiches and pastries in the Santasport Café. Plus, there’s a salad bar near the bowling alley.

The hotel itself has a standout dining scene, with two à la carte restaurants to its name. Tex-Mex joint Amarillo serves up fajitas, burritos and quesadillas, as well as juicy steaks and burgers. If you’re feeling really hungry, go for the XXXL burger. Then there’s Fransmanni, which specialises in traditional French cooking. Starters include classics like snails in garlic butter, and for mains you can tuck in to dishes like chicken casserole and duck leg confit with mushroom ravioli.
As for what else is on offer here, little ones are catered for in a big way. As well as their own menu in the restaurants, they've got a playroom and a games room. For adults, meanwhile, there’s a cosy English pub-style bar with a TV, as well as a nightclub where you can dance until the early hours.

Slightly removed from Rovaniemi's busy centre, these traditional cottages have got all the hallmarks of snug winter hideaways. They're set on a hillside, surrounded by snow-dusted woods, so great views span every which way. What's more, getting out and about from here is simple. A five-minute taxi ride will take you to the city's shops, restaurants and bars, and the nearest ski slopes even closer.
As for cottages themselves, traditional wood panelling and pretty white fences make up the exteriors. Step inside, and you're greeted by beamed ceilings, open fireplaces and sink-into-me sofas. Mod-cons come in the form of TVs and Playstation 2s, while in-room saunas make it easy to warm up after a day in the snow.
Each cottage comes with a kitchen too, which is kitted out with all the essentials. As well as ovens, microwaves and cooking rings, you’ll find nice-to-haves like coffee makers. Best of all, if you stay here you get the added bonus of a breakfast pack. They include things like bacon, eggs, bread, fruit juice, and tea and coffee, so you won’t need to dash to the supermarket as soon as you arrive.
